The USA hosted the World Cup for the first time in 1994, and despite skepticism, it was very successful. Not only did it boost the popularity of the sport within the country (and helped lead to the creation of Major League Soccer), but it also set records for highest average attendance (almost 69,000 per game) and total attendance (almost 3.6 million). This last record remains intact despite the tournament expanding from 24 to 32 teams in 1998 (allowing for more games and ticket sales).
Help bring the World Cup back to the United States, and Boston!
